How to Get Cited by ChatGPT: A Practical GEO Playbook

Ask ChatGPT to recommend a project management tool, and it doesn't crawl the live web in that moment — it draws on training data, retrieval-augmented sources, and increasingly, live browsing plugins that pull from sites with strong entity signals. Getting cited in that process starts with a question most brands haven't asked: does the model actually know who you are?

The first step in any GEO engagement is an AI-visibility audit. We run a controlled set of prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and record exactly how — or whether — each model describes the client's brand, product and category. This usually surfaces one of three problems: the brand is invisible, the brand is described inaccurately, or a competitor is being cited instead in a category the client should own.

From there, the work is entity clarity. Generative models rely heavily on structured, unambiguous signals: consistent naming across your site and third-party listings, Organization schema markup, a genuinely informative About page, and Wikipedia/Wikidata presence where relevant. This is unglamorous work, but it's the foundation everything else sits on.

Content re-engineering comes next. The content that gets cited by generative engines tends to share a shape: it leads with a direct, quotable answer, it's specific rather than vague, and it's backed by named expertise or data rather than generic marketing language. Rewriting a handful of high-intent pages in this format usually moves the needle faster than producing new content from scratch.

Finally — and this is the part most agencies skip — you have to monitor, not just optimize once. Model behavior shifts with every update. We track citation frequency and accuracy monthly, the same way we'd track keyword rankings, because a citation win in March isn't guaranteed to survive an August model update.

GEO isn't a replacement for SEO; it's an additional layer of visibility for a search landscape that increasingly starts with a conversation instead of a query box.
